We have bought our dream house, but as you can see from the photos below, it may not be everybody´s dream.
But if you look past the dirt, the rotten wood, the bad electrics and plumbing, then you will see what we see, an amazing period property just crying out to be restored to its former glory. Each post from now on will show you the progress we are making.
Enjoy the story and if you have any ideas please throw them our way, so far nothing is set in stone.

Oh WOW!, That is, as you say, crying out for a sympathetic period restoration, The potential is enormous and you clearly have an eye for this. I shall follow with great interest
Will be a great asset for you and the local community.
Will be interested in how renovations are handled and costs for various tasks.
I wish you a smooth ride and grrat results.
thank you, the local community have welcomed us with open arms, every thing will be blogged at some point so hopefully i will be able to include costs as well
My family have also purchased 8 bedroom 4 story manor house from the mid 1800,s in central Portugal ,we have amazing hand painted hallways ,ornate plaster ceilings ,not done any major renovations yet other than add Ballrina wood burning water heater to the bathroom and temp wood burner to kitchen till Rayburn is fitted .been delayed by the fires in the region . Happy to share knowledge about said properties as I’ve been doing research on manor houses central Portugal for nearly 3 years .and a lot are older than appear as big remodeling went on in the late 1800,s on the return from South America of very wealthy families ,they fetched the metal work and French influence .Averio was port they arrived at and his a good example of architecture from that era .noticed on your pics that you might have hand planted walls too.how wonderful to meet others as crazy mad preservers of culture heritage and grandeur that’s Portugal as us .Have complete opposite too hobbit stone eco cobbled small holding high up in the mountains with about 30%left to finish as village hit hard by the October fires so having to replant everything lucky renovation only minor hit but still not finished .would love to meet up if ya close to us .First thing check out were ya fossa is located and no loo paper down toilets, as you might find its incredibly small for such a large property.and current cleaning products could kill trees etc near it .enjoy this amazing project.made me think I should do a blog to.
Hi Elizabeth, you should certainly start a blog as yours sounds an even bigger project than ours is. we are lucky to be in a village so are on mains drains, but no thought was given when the connection was made and it is in the worst place possible, yes we have the original hand painted walls and in one room it was the marble effect, unfortunately previous repairs did not look after anything and these can not be saved. It would be great to meet up we are between Tomar and Torres Novas
Love the arched windows and door. This certainly has great potential. Seeing what you did in Finisterre, in your hands, this is going to be very nice indeed. For us, another great journey to follow.
Wishing you all the best.
I presume you are going to be living on the first floor whilst you do something with the down stairs, would love to know if you intend to convert it into a huge living space.
That’s a lot of amazing property there and that view!!! I can quite see why it stole your heart!
I’m so looking forward to reading your adventures.

Ô my God how are you courageous !
It’s a very nice house with a lot of potentiality but by what are you going to begin ? I am going to follow your new adventure as yours in Brittany.Catherine.
Actually the electrics don’t look all that sketchy, just totally unsuitable for anything but a cellar, garage or barn as far as aesthetics are concerned!
they completely ruin the wonderful hall way and a few things trip, so we are going to be better safe than sorry, plus then we will have none on display, it is hard to imagine why a professional would install what looks like as you say, garage electrics in such a stunning house

It’s wonderful, and you’ve already got a toilet 😁😁. Are you far away from a builders merchant ?.

we are still deciding what to do, one big room would be spectacular, but probably not very efficient for us

Looks quite grand, love the fires, will you keep them? From the pictures it looks like it’s in better shape than when you first bought in France.

it is in one way and then in another some bits are far worse. we will be keeping the fires for now and then decide what we are going to do
